Compare Melio when the main job is vendor bill payment. Evaluate Airwallex when receiving, holding, converting, and paying across currencies are central to the business.
Define the international requirement precisely
International is too broad to be a useful software requirement. A US business occasionally paying a foreign supplier in dollars differs from a business collecting customer revenue in euros and paying expenses from that balance. Write down the entities, incoming currencies, outgoing currencies, recipient countries, and expected transaction sizes.
Airwallex's US offering spans business accounts, currency workflows, spend, and payments. Melio's focus is the vendor-payment process. Product availability depends on geography, entity, and plan, so neither a global coverage number nor a US pricing headline establishes that your specific route is supported.
Compare the money flow end to end
| Need | Evaluation priority |
|---|---|
| US supplier bills | Funding choices, recipient delivery, approvals, and accounting. |
| Foreign supplier invoice | Recipient currency, transfer route, exchange quote, and fees. |
| Foreign customer revenue | Collection method, settlement currency, and access to funds. |
| Several legal entities | Onboarding, account ownership, permissions, and reporting boundaries. |
| Cards and employee spend | Eligibility, issuing geography, policies, and accounting integration. |
Compare recipient amount, not just transfer fee
A low transfer fee does not necessarily produce the lowest total cost. Exchange rates, conversion charges, intermediary fees, and the recipient bank can affect what arrives. Compare quotes taken at the same time for the same funded amount, destination, and delivery route.
In an illustrative quote comparison, one service charges a $10 transfer fee while another charges $20. If the first delivers 40 fewer units of the recipient's currency after conversion, it may be the more expensive option despite the lower headline fee. Record the amount you pay, the amount the supplier receives, and whether any remaining deductions are possible.
When a focused payment tool is enough
If almost all activity consists of domestic vendor invoices, a broader international finance setup may add unnecessary operating work. Evaluate Melio against your actual payment methods, accounting records, and approval requirements. For occasional overseas bills, request quotes for the precise route rather than assuming a separate platform is required.
On the other hand, recurring foreign-currency collections and expenses may justify evaluating how an international platform handles balances and conversion. Map the whole cycle, including customer receipts and refunds. The value comes from solving a recurring operating need, not from opening more accounts than the business will use.
Check access and accounting by entity
Determine which legal entity owns each account and which staff members can convert, transfer, or spend funds. A department budget and a legal-entity boundary are not interchangeable. Have the accountant review how foreign-currency balances, fees, and exchange differences enter the books.
Ask how the platform handles a rejected international payment, a corrected beneficiary name, and a refund in a currency that has moved since the original transaction. The answer should identify the support route, available tracking, and accounting records. Do not make a critical supplier deadline the first test of these processes.
Pilot the route that matters most
Choose a supported, legitimate payment with enough time to investigate delays. Confirm recipient instructions, obtain the quote, record the expected arrival, and reconcile the final received amount. If international collections are part of the decision, evaluate that process separately rather than inferring it from a successful outgoing payment.
Choose the platform whose documented scope and observed workflow match your needs. Retain the existing process until pending transactions are reconciled and staff know how to handle exceptions. For domestic banking as the central workflow, compare Melio and Relay instead.
